2006 - A Roller-Coaster year for fuel!

The national average cost of a litre of diesel ended the year slightly down on the opening week's price according to the RHA's monitoring unit. The figure of 75.36 pence represented a slight reduction on 75.91 pence (all figures exclusive of VAT).

"Whilst this appears encouraging the fact is 2006 has been a roller coaster ride as not a single week has witnessed price stability" said RHA Chief Executive Roger King.

In thirty weeks of 2006 prices increased reaching a peak on the 28 April of 80.82 pence.  "Since then prices have fallen back with intermittent increases kicking in every so often.

The Chancellor's imposition of a 1.25ppl increase in duty in December was slightly blunted by reducing oil prices so that the increase was nearer 1ppl.  This was a wholly unnecessary increase and merely exacerbated the struggle hauliers have in running a business when a prime resource accounting for some thirty per cent of their costs fluctuates so much".

"The RHA hopes that 2007 will bring with it a greater degree of price stability," he continued.  "Operators would far prefer to concentrate on delivering efficient transport services to their customers rather than spend so much time on renegotiating rates based on raw material costs that see saw all over the place".
